Writing technical reports for non-technical readers

Course Overview

This course aims at equipping participants with skills and knowledge required to translate technical articles to reports for readers who are non-specialists in the subject. The course will enable you produce articles for publication in newspapers and policy briefs that are consumed by non-technical audiences.

Course Duration

18 hours (3 days, in-person).

Structure and content of the course

Lesson 1: Introduction to communication of technical subjects to non-technical audience.
Lesson 2: Case studies/samples of technical reports that have been translated for non-technical readers.
Lesson 3: Audience analysis: types of audiences; getting to know your audience.
Lesson 4: Practical writing activities; reality checking using feedback from facilitators and peers.
Lesson 5: Selecting suitable platforms for your article; media relations.
Lesson 6: Reflection and graduation.

 

Deliverables from the course

All participants are expected to produce a ready article(s) for publication by the end of the course. The participants will receive a certificate of participation from Strathmore University.

Course fees

Training fee is Kshs 35,000.
The cost is inclusive of meals and training materials.
