Financial modelling for informed decision making

Financial Modelling is an important tool for decision making in businesses and non-profit organisations. Skillful mastery allows users to check the financial implications of decisions beforehand and choose robust and profitable courses of action. Users can also test scenarios and check sensitivity of outcomes to key inputs and therefore gain extensive insight into prospective decisions.

The Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences Financial Modelling course instils in participants the expertise to develop dynamic Financial Models. Participants learn how to develop Integrated Financial Statements on MS Excel using inputs from cases developed specifically for the course. The cases include Real Estate development and Project Finance and the skills taught are transferable to other areas (including Manufacturing.)

Course objective

Construct and use Financial Models to make Informed Decisions for a New or Existing Business or Non-Profit. Decisions include:

  • Financial Mix
  • Go or No-go Decision
  • Investment Appraisal, etc.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course participants should be able to do the following:

  1. Develop the 3 Financial Statements based on given inputs: Income Statement, Cashflow Statement, Balance Sheet
  2. Develop Financial Models that consist of Integrated Financial Statements
  3. Check Financial Model for Appropriateness and Correctness
  4. Perform Financial Analysis
  5. Carry out Scenario Testing and Sensitivity Analyses
  6. Use appropriate Tools and Features of MS Excel

Practitioners in Finance, Strategy, and Investment teams who are keen to develop financial projections using MS Excel in their business or operations and guide management in making key decisions.

Payment and registration

  • The cost for the program is KES 60,000 (Registration deposit 50% of cost)
  • Cost covers all study materials
  • Participants must however have a laptop with a working MS Excel application installed and reliable internet access
