Centre for Applied Research in Mathematical Sciences now a Fully-Fledged Institute (IMS)

By March 21, 2017 No Comments

Strathmore University’s Centre for Applied Research in Mathematical Sciences (CARMS) is now a fully-fledged institute under the name Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS). Initially the department operated as a research center that offered services to other schools, but were not allowed to start their own programs. As the department grew, there was need to introduce new programs and as a result, the center sent a proposal to University Council to become an institute. Early this year, the proposal was approved and the department is now operating as an institute.

Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMS) is committed to delivering high quality graduate education and research through providing a stimulating research environment and continuous support for our researchers and students. IMS plans to promote and develop research and consulting in the mathematical sciences, including statistics, mathematical biology, mathematical finance and mathematics education. It will do this through international conferences, international research workshops, graduate level schools, and statistical consultancy services. The Institute, through its research activities and biennial international mathematics conferences, has become an internationally recognized centre of excellence for knowledge transfer, and promotion of contact and collaboration between senior mathematics researchers of international standing and early career researchers and postgraduate students from Africa.

IMS has developed three interdisciplinary graduate programmes which are scheduled to start in September of this year, therefore students with knowledge from other fields such as finance, biology, physics etc. can do the master courses provided they have a mathematics background. Scholarships will also be offered to one student per programme every year. The institute will also offer certificate programs in collaboration with; the Faculty of Information Technology, School of Finance and Applied Economics, Strathmore Business School and CREATES research center. The developed graduate programmes are;

  • Masters of Science in Biomathematics – cost Kshs. 639,170
  • Masters of Science in Statistical Science – cost Kshs. 612,380
  • Masters of Science in Mathematical Finance – cost Kshs. 648,100

Other Masters programs to be introduced in future will include;

  • Master of Science in Data Science
  • Master of Science in Decision Analysis
  • Master of Science in Mathematical Economics
  • Master of Science in Operations Research
  • Master of Science in Analysis, Algebra, Geometry
  • Master of Science in Computational Science
  • Master of Science in Mathematical Engineering
  • Master of Science in Industrial Mathematics

IMS Vision

To be a centre of excellence in applied research and innovation in mathematics and mathematical sciences and to highly contribute to the quality of teaching of mathematics.

IMS Mission

The institute exists to nurture the growth of mathematical expertise among research scientists by fostering fundamental and multidisciplinary research and consultancies in areas of applied mathematics and mathematical sciences and to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
