Course Description

The Master of Science in Economics designed to equip students with a strong foundation in economic theory, empirical methods, and analytical skills necessary for addressing complex economic challenges. The program integrates rigorous quantitative training with real-world applications, ensuring that graduates can contribute effectively in academia, public policy, and business. With the growing reliance on data, the program emphasizes mathematical modeling, econometrics, and data science, preparing students to analyze economic issues using advanced decision-making methods, including machine learning. Graduates will be well-positioned to tackle pressing global challenges such as inequality, climate change, and sustainable development. Developed with input from key stakeholders such as the IMF, World Bank, and Central Bank, the curriculum ensures alignment with industry needs. It is particularly suited for individuals with strong quantitative backgrounds and provides a pathway to doctoral studies or careers in research, financial institutions, and policy-making.

Program Benefits and Outcomes

At the end of the programme, the students should be able to:

  • Acquire economic theory and skills necessary for application within economic fields.
  • Develop in the areas of statistical and econometric methods and be able to carry out statistical and econometric analyses.
  • Contribute to policy making in economic matters using evidence-based research.
  • Conduct independent and objective research in the field of economics.
  • Read and evaluate academic literature in economics and critique the quality of arguments in relation to specific economic issues.

Evening Program: 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Entry requirements

  1. The following are eligible for admission into the Master of Science (MSc.) in Economics programme:
  • Holders of First Class or Upper Second-Class Honours degrees in economics, financial economics, actuarial science, financial engineering, economics and statistics, mathematics, statistics, or any other degree of equivalent mathematical rigour from recognised universities; or
  • Holders of Lower Second-Class degrees in economics, financial economics, actuarial science, financial engineering, economics and statistics, mathematics, statistics, or any other degree of equivalent mathematical rigour from recognised universities together with 2 years relevant work experience. In the absence of relevant work experience, a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate of professional programme; or 
  • Any other related criteria that may be considered and approved by the Academic Council as equivalent to a) or b) above.
  1. In addition to meeting the above criteria, the applicants will be required to attend and pass an oral interview and a Graduate Entrance Examination (GEE).
  2. They will also be required to present two reference letters from academic referees.

Intake

Intake is in the month of May every year.

Interview requirements

The Oral Interview and GEE are held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 2:00pm. Below are some of the requirements you need to prepare:

  1. Originals and Certified copies of K.S.C.E (or its equivalent), Undergraduate degree certificate and transcript of records (TOR) in English, giving full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained
  2. Two (2) completed Reference Forms from former undergraduate/graduate professors and/or employer particularly qualified to attest to the applicant’s qualification for graduate study
  3. Dully filled graduate studies application form

  1. An updated Curriculum Vitae/Resume
  2. current passport size photos
  3. Provide a copy of National Identity Card (ID)or copy of Passport
  4. KShs 3000 interview fee payable on the interview day.
