Actuarial Science Student Participates in 2017 Perspectives on Actuarial Risks Conference

4th Year BBS Actuarial Science student Anderson Ngowa, from the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS), was privileged to present a research paper at the Perspectives on Actuarial Risks in Talks of Young Researchers Conference (PARTY) held in Ascona, Switzerland. This year’s theme was Ageing and Risk Management.

The International Winter School, PARTY, targets young researchers working on current actuarial science topics.

Anderson, under the supervision of Lecturer Dr. John Olukuru, gave an impactful presentation on a paper titled Modeling Heat-Related Mortality Based on Greenhouse Emissions in OECD Countries. The paper focused on proposing a mortality model that fits mortality rates using the levels of greenhouse emissions. As such, demographers, climate-risk experts, and actuaries can be more informed on better mortality modeling techniques hence improve mortality forecasting.

“It was such a great experience to present my research paper in an international conference. The environment was friendly and I got insightful feedback on how to extend my work for potential publication. I plan to work on the feedback even as I prepare for other upcoming international conferences where my paper was also accepted for presentation. (9th International Conference on Climate Change, UK & 19th International Conference on Actuarial Science and Risk Management, Portugal)”, Anderson stated.
