Winners Valuraha Investment Challenge, Awarded Scholarships to Join Strathmore University

(L-R) Winners Stacy Njimu and Gerald Koskei with Dean SFAE Dr. John Olukuru

Strathmore University School of Finance and Applied Economics (SFAE), in partnership with Valuraha Group - a student founded investment company, engaged students from various high schools to a challenging yet exciting, competitive session that tested the young minds on how to invest in the financial stock markets. The event was held at Alliance High School on the 11th of February 2016.

The students were judged on their ability to present an in-depth analysis of a public listed company on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) as well as their progress on the Valuraha virtual trading platform. Participating high schools included, Lenana High School, Precious Blood Riruta, Kenya High School, Loreto Limuru Girls High School, and Starehe Boys centre with a total number 325 participating students.

Key industry experts from UAP Insurance and Old Mutual Group judged the students’ presentations. A Keynote address was given by the Managing Director Unit Trusts, Mr. Peter Ng’eno, who encouraged the students to grow a culture of investing at an early age to become future leaders who will make a difference in the Kenyan economy.

The Dean of SFAE, Dr. John Olokuru, challenged the students to continue in zeal, noting that they have adequate potential and ability to influence the environment. He stated that the government may start initiatives and projects, but their fruitful completion and use, and ultimate handover to coming generations, will always be the students responsibility.

Two students emerged winners and were awarded scholarships to pursue degrees of their choice at Strathmore University. The students, Stacy Njimu from Precious Blood Riruta, and Gerald Koskei of Starehe Boys Centre won this opportunity. A cash prize of Kshs 100,000 was awarded to Faith Muthoni from Precious Blood Riruta, who showcased her investment skills by increasing her investment of Kshs 5000 to Kshs 31,500. This encouraged the students to not only focus on white collar opportunities when they finish their university degrees but also to venture into entrepreneurship as a way of earning a living.

Congratulations to the outstanding winners.
