Five SFAE Students Present Papers at the 2015 Global Conference

Grace Kiganya, Lucy Wainaina, Monica Mwangi, Joy Warimah and Barrack Mandela from the School of Finance and Applied Economics (SFAE) were honored to present their papers at the 2015 Global Conference on Development Finance which was held at the Spier Wine Estate, Stellenbosch in South Africa.

The students were accompanied by Mr. Ferdinand Othieno, Research Director at SFAE, whose paper “Stochastic Discount Factor and the Equity Risk Premium,”was also accepted for oral presentation at the conference. They had a rare chance not only to mingle with a wide range of individuals but also to present their papers at the conference. The acceptance of their papers by the conference conveners was not only humbling to the five students, but an honorary gesture as their papers are part of their fourth year research projects. The papers presented included:

Joy       - “Analyzing how Twitter Hashtags can be used to predict the Movement of Stock Prices.”

Lucy     - “Forecasting foreign exchange rates in Kenya using stochastic models.”

Grace - “Panel Analysis of the Finance-Growth Nexus in Sub-Saharan Africa.”

Monica - “Investigation of the fair price of carbon credits: An account of incentive price offers.”

Barrack - “Tax Buoyancy and Elasticity of Developing Countries.”

The biggest learning point for the students was through the feedback they got from their presentations and as such the focus was on how to make their research projects better. They also enjoyed being in a new city which has a unique allure to all its first time and repeat visitors. “Cape Town is a very beautiful city. From its larger than life mountain overlooking the City Bowl, the harbor and white beaches, its sprawling wine lands and a buzzing waterfront are just the start of the adventure and this makes it a tourist playground” said Grace.

The students remain grateful to SFAE’s faculty; Dr. John Olukuru, Mr. Ferdinand Othieno, Mr. Meleah Oleche, Mrs. Mary Mutinda-Kipkemoi and Mr. John Ocheche for their supervisory role and guidance towards getting their papers accepted at the conference. The faculty are co-authors of the papers.
