SFAE Students Present Papers at AFJ Conference in Cape Town

Graduating students from the School of Finance and Applied Economics (SFAE), Donald Kariuki (BBS, Financial Economics) and Dennis Kembero (BBS, Financial Economics) recently presented their research studies at the Annual African Finance Journal Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.


The African Finance Journal and the African Finance Association in association with several academic institutions hosted the 12th edition of the conference that brings together various studies from the continent. This year’s edition laid emphasis on high quality, theoretical and/or applied research, the focus of the conference was on the emerging trends in accounting, finance and economics which have special relevance to Africa’s development.


The papers presented by the Strathmore students were; The Relationship between Commercial Bank’s Lending Rate and Asset Prices in Kenya by Donald Kariuki in conjunction with Dr. Robert Mudida (Strathmore Business School, SBS) and Dr. John Olukuru (SFAE); The Impact of Monetary Policy on Stock Market Performance by Dennis Kembero in conjunction with Dr. John Olukuru (SFAE).


The conference provided an insightful experience for the students given the guests at the conference that included numerous academics, practitioners and scholars in the field of Finance, Economics and Accounting from across Africa.  Some of the key guests included: Professor Nicholas Biekpe - President of the African Growth Institute and visiting professor from the University of Cape Town, Dr. Sephooko Motelle from Central Bank of Lesotho, and closer home Dr. DC J Chironga from Central Bank of Kenya.


The students termed the experience as insightful, motivating and humbling given the caliber of individuals present during the conference. They look forward to taking the experience and positive comments towards publication of their papers.


All in all, the opportunity served as a testament to the impressive background and knowledge imparted to students through Strathmore University through the School of Finance and Applied Economics in aiding their ambitions.
